Lexile Proficiency Bands
Read 180 Framework
Read 180 is a 90-minute block period designed to help students become better readers. Read 180 helps students improve their phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, spelling, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing.
During the 90 minute period students work in 4 different rotations separated into 20-minute segments. During the first 20 minutes students participate in whole group instruction where, as a whole class, we read and discuss the current reading assignment. Next, the students break into 3 groups designated by the teacher based on students' needs and skill focus. These groups include the Instructional Software, Silent Reading, and Small Group Instruction.
*Note: 6th grade Read 180 and Read 180 FLEX are not blocked periods. Students in these classes will complete the 90-minute model over a two day period.
Rotation descriptions:
1. Instructional Software: The instructional software may only be accessed at school. While engaging with the software, students practice in four different "zones," including the Reading Zone, Word Zone, Spelling Zone, Success Zone and Writing Zone. In each zone students practice comprehension, fluency, word recognition/automaticity, spelling, and decoding. The software is leveled to the students Lexile, therefore providing individualized instruction to each student.

2. Silent Reading: Students read self-selected, leveled books and complete a guided writing assignment. When students have completed a book, they take a quiz on the "Scholastic Reading Counts!" software on the computer. **Students are required to complete a short summary statement every day based on what they've read and get a teacher's signature on their Reading Log.
3. Small Group Instruction: During small group instruction, students work with the teacher and 4-6 other students to continue the day's lesson and further examine comprehension skills and vocabulary. Small group instruction is also used to target specific skills based on the students' differentiated needs in regards to reading fluency, comprehension skills, decoding skills, and writing techniques.
